Place & story

An older shell, a new interior

St Michael’s Catholic Church at Tagheen was rebuilt in 1955 under Father James Mulrennan. The national architectural survey identifies surviving fabric from a chapel of 1834, shown with a smaller footprint on the first Ordnance Survey map. [2]

The cruciform building has slender pointed windows and a three-part window above its western entrance. Inside, a timber-panelled choir gallery faces the sanctuary. Memorial stained glass dated 1955 survives in the nave and transepts. The grounds include Mulrennan’s grave, recording his death in 1960. [2]
