Place & story

Churches on the hill

Skreen’s Church of Ireland church was built in 1818 on an elevated site beside an older church ruin. The newer building has a cruciform plan and a three-stage tower with battlements and corner pinnacles. Pointed windows with timber tracery and limestone dressings give it a restrained Gothic character. The adjacent ruin, dated by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage to around 1550, preserves traces of narrow windows and contains later tombs within its walls. [2]

The Diamonds’ stone carving

The churchyard’s monuments display detailed carving in stone as well as worked metal grave markers. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage associates some of the carving with the Diamond family, whose recorded working period extended from 1774 to 1886. Among the distinctive monuments is a dark stone relief of a ploughman wearing a top hat and tails, with two horses drawing his plough. Such occupational imagery gives the burial ground an individual character alongside its more familiar funerary symbols. [2]

People & connections

George Gabriel Stokes

George Gabriel Stokes was born at Skreen on 13 August 1819, the son of Gabriel Stokes, the parish rector. His later career was centred on Cambridge, where he became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1849 and held the chair until his death in 1903. The Royal Society’s catalogue records research interests ranging from fluid mechanics and optics to acoustics, linking this small Sligo parish with a wide field of nineteenth-century science. [3]
