Place & story

Work in the Blackwater district

Samuel Lewis’s description of Killyman in 1837 concerned a parish extending across parts of Tyrone and Armagh, rather than a single compact village. He recorded linen and cotton manufacture and three substantial bleaching grounds. Other local industries included a paper mill at Twyford, earthenware production at Lower Corr and red sandstone quarrying at Dungorman. Together these activities show how varied work in the surrounding agricultural district could be. [2]

Churches and schools in 1837

Lewis dated the parish church to 1823 and also recorded a Catholic chapel and a Wesleyan Methodist place of worship. His account described four public schools, attended by about 250 children, alongside four private schools and a Sunday school. The figures cover the historic parish. They offer a picture of education spread among several small institutions, supported through different religious and local arrangements. [2]

Renewing the primary school

A later chapter in local schooling was marked by the opening of new facilities at Killyman Primary School in October 2026. The Department of Education recorded two additional classrooms, a separate space for small-group learning, storage and new bathrooms. Construction had actually finished on 15 September 2025, at a cost of £846,804. The announcement distinguishes the completion of the building work from its subsequent formal opening. [3]
