Place & story

Medieval carving within Saint Carthach’s

Saint Carthach’s Church combines a largely rebuilt nave of 1732 with substantial Romanesque fabric dating from around 1175. Its chancel window has chevron ornament and engaged columns, while the interior chancel arch carries carved human masks. An ogee-headed window on the north side has animal-head decoration. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records the church as originally cruciform. Its surviving medieval details are especially striking beside the simpler later windows and doorway, making the building’s successive phases visible rather than hiding them. [2]

A ruined church and reused stone

The nearby small ruined church contains a Romanesque west doorway and both Romanesque and Gothic windows. Tessa Garton’s survey for the Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture identifies reused stone from an older building, including worked blocks that may have belonged to Saint Carthach’s stone chancel roof. She relates the doorway’s sculpture to the Nuns’ Church at Clonmacnoise and suggests a date around 1160. The ruin therefore records rebuilding and reuse, as well as the survival of medieval craftsmanship within Rahan’s monastic complex. [3]

The former college at Tullybeg

Nearby Saint Stanislaus’s College at Tullybeg began in 1815–18 as a school for younger boys. It expanded in the 1850s to accommodate older pupils, with further buildings added during the following decades. In 1918 it became a Jesuit novices’ house and subsequently a retreat house. The National Inventory distinguishes the restrained early block from the more decorated northern additions, whose window surrounds and quoins use elaborate render detailing. The college, adjoining chapel and outbuildings form a substantial educational and religious complex. [4]
