Place & story

A home for retired soldiers

James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, laid the Royal Hospital’s foundation stone in 1680 and saw it completed four years later. William Robinson, the state surveyor general, designed it as a home for army pensioners, with inspiration from Les Invalides in Paris. Accommodation occupied three ranges around the courtyard, while the northern range contained the chapel, great hall and Master’s quarters. The building combined residential care with a substantial ceremonial presence. [2]

The county gaol

Kilmainham Gaol opened in 1796 as Dublin’s new county prison and closed in 1924. Its history includes political imprisonment associated with rebellions, the War of Independence and the Civil War. Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin and Charles Stewart Parnell were among those detained. The prison also held thousands of other men, women and children under the ordinary criminal system. Its museum therefore records both political events and the wider experience of incarceration. [3]

Making space for modern art

The Office of Public Works restored the Royal Hospital between 1980 and 1984. In 1988 part of the west wing was fitted out for the Gordon Lambert Collection, followed by work from 1990 to accommodate the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The conversion adapted former residential ranges and introduced a new entrance and stair within the southern range. Exhibition use gave the old institution another purpose while retaining its courtyard arrangement and much of its architectural character. [4]
