Place & story

Robert Emmets

Robert Emmets’ fiftieth-anniversary account recalls men meeting in Perrystown in the summer of 1969 to organise Gaelic games for local children. Families moving into the newly built houses supplied enough players for street leagues on the Eight Acres. The club subsequently developed strong ties with local schools and the community centre. [2]

Manortown United

Manortown United grew from residents’ football leagues played on Mountdown Park and Hillsbrook Crescent in 1967. A larger committee formed the club in 1969, combining Manor Estate and Perrystown in its name. Its first schoolboy league matches took place that August. When the club moved to the Eight Acres, volunteers cleared stones from the former quarry to make it playable. [3]
