Place & story
Cricket in the nineteenth century
Historian Jim Bennett identifies a June 1897 newspaper report as the earliest cricket reference he found for Ring Commons. It records a victory over Garristown by twenty runs. Early teams also played under the name Briarland, reflecting the location of their ground. Bennett’s research follows changing team names and interruptions in play, rather than assuming an unbroken club history from that first report. [2]
The school as a meeting place
Ring Commons School also served as a social venue. Bennett records cricket-club dances there in the 1920s and meetings connected with the formation of the Fingal League. Ring Commons was among the seven clubs participating when the league was fully operating in 1927. The school’s role extended beyond lessons to the organisation of sport and events for the surrounding community. [2]
A sports centre takes shape
Ring Commons Sports Centre dates its foundation to 1977, when local young people sought to form their own cricket club instead of playing for neighbouring teams. Bennett records voluntary labour, fundraising and council assistance in reclaiming marshy ground. The centre developed beyond cricket to accommodate other sports, giving the area a lasting community venue as well as a home ground. [3] [2]
