Place & story
A village fair
In 1837 Samuel Lewis recorded 96 people living in the village of Saint Margaret’s, within a parish population of 325. Horses and cattle were sold at a fair held on 30 and 31 July. The village lay on the old road to Naul, away from the principal Ashbourne coach road. A Catholic chapel and a national school served the settlement, while the older church was already in ruins. [2]
The church completed in 1900
George Luke O’Connor designed the later Catholic church in Early English Gothic style. Its foundation stone was laid on 14 August 1898, and the building was dedicated on 25 November 1900. W. Connolly and Sons carried out the construction. Damp entering through the stonework prompted restoration in the following decades, with William Henry Byrne and Son associated with work in 1911 and 1915–16. [3]
Football and the move to Kilreesk
Saint Margaret’s GAA club was founded in 1908. Its players included Seán Skelly, a National League medal winner with Dublin in 1952, and Mick Cronin, an All-Ireland minor football medal winner in 1954. The club decided to relocate its grounds in 1983. Fundraising and preparation followed, and the new grounds at Kilreesk opened in 1985. [4]
