Place & story
A tower cut off from the tide
Williamstown Martello Tower originally stood on the shoreline and was exposed to tidal flooding. Built during the coastal defence programme of 1804–1806, it was cut off from the sea by the Dublin to Kingstown railway after 1834. Later in the nineteenth century it became a private residence, while the surrounding ground level was raised. Its setting now belongs to the Seafort Parade streetscape, whose central terrace runs from numbers 4 to 17. [2]
