Place & story
Farrell’s chapel of ease
William Farrell designed Derrylane’s Church of Ireland church in 1833 as a chapel of ease for Killeshandra parish. A Board of First Fruits loan of £800 and Lord Farnham’s £100 donation helped finance it. The modest three-bay building uses pointed windows, corner pinnacles and a pinnacled bellcote to give its front a distinctive outline. Inside, cast-iron roof trusses support the roof; the National Inventory also records an organ and stained glass dating from 1968. [2] [3]
Raising a glebe house
A parish vestry meeting reported in June 1876 thanked Lord Farnham for granting the Representative Church Body a fee-farm lease of five acres for a glebe house and its grounds, together with £20 towards the project. Parishioners also thanked William Reilly of Drumkillrooske for collecting building funds. The incumbent, John J. Egan, held the plans and specifications at Farnacere House, where prospective builders could inspect them. The notice catches the parish preparing to provide its minister with a home. [4]
The surviving rectory
The former Derrylane Rectory stands nearby in Aghnacor townland. The National Inventory dates it to about 1880 and describes a two-storey house with a three-bay front and hipped slate roof. Carved timber brackets support the overhanging eaves, while a recessed panelled entrance is framed by side lights and a curved overlight. Its more domestic architecture complements the earlier church, preserving a second part of the parish’s nineteenth-century building history. [5]
