Place & story
From Drumauna to Drung
The parish’s account records that a cornerstone from the older chapel at Drumauna was incorporated into the present church in 1948. Work began during Fr James Brady’s ministry, but he left for Belturbet before its completion. Bishop Austin Quinn dedicated the Church of the Immaculate Conception on 16 September 1951. [2]
A classical church and separate tower
The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates the building work to 1947–1948 and identifies Simon Aloysius Leonard of W.H. Byrne & Son as its architect. The church has a pedimented entrance front, a copper roof and a separate five-stage bell tower joined to the main building by a screen wall. Inside are a west gallery and contemporary timber benches.
