Place & story

Templeogue House

Templeogue House’s present form dates largely to about 1810, incorporating substantial fabric from an earlier fortified house of around 1730. The architectural inventory records a five-bay residence raised above a basement, with a circular corner projection and a vaulted cellar retaining wattle-and-daub ceiling material. Later adaptation brought the building into use by Templeogue Bridge Club, preserving the old house within modern facilities. [2]

A trace of the water garden

Archaeological testing beside the house in 1998 revealed how repeated construction had disturbed the grounds. Rónán Swan’s team opened three trenches north and east of the building and identified a ditch to its north. His report considered this probably part of Sir Compton Domville’s eighteenth-century water garden. The interpretation connects a buried feature with the estate’s designed landscape while retaining uncertainty over its exact function. [3]

Renewing the village streets

A village-improvement scheme opened on 3 June 2022 after design work begun in 2016. South Dublin County Council provided pedestrian crossings, cycle facilities, lighting, parking and a small planted public space. Construction also required extra drainage and work around previously undocumented services. The project altered the everyday village streetscape, adding trees, planting and seating alongside practical changes to movement through the centre. [4]
