Place & story
The surviving ringfort
The archaeological inventory describes a ringfort in Lisnageer with an interior about thirty-five metres across. A substantial earth bank encloses it, with a deep outer ditch and an additional low bank along part of the western side. A gap and causeway to the southeast were identified as the original entrance. [2]
A site preserved on maps
A second ringfort, near a stream, was labelled on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1836 and 1876. The archaeological record reports that nothing was visible at ground level when surveyed, illustrating how historical mapping can preserve evidence of a feature lost from the surface. [3]
Reading the name cautiously
The Placenames Database records an 1836 interpretation connecting Lisnageer with berries. Its explanatory note gives a broader meaning involving round objects and stresses that the Irish word caor has several meanings. The older interpretation therefore remains part of the name’s research history, without establishing a particular crop or local custom. [4]
