Place & story

Fields, roads and a corn mill

The 1836 Ordnance Survey name-book account describes Ryefield as part of the Marquis of Headfort’s property. Most of its land was cultivated, with smaller areas of bog and planted woodland. Roads linking Oldcastle with Bailieborough and Kells with Virginia crossed the townland. A corn mill and kiln stood in its southern part, giving the farming landscape a place where harvested grain could be processed. [2]

Ryefield School in the estate papers

Schooling also left a record in the Headfort estate archive. Letters sent by the Reverend Albert E. King in 1898 concerned Ryefield School alongside parish subscriptions and rent. Further correspondence from the Reverend J. T. Webster covered the school between 1900 and 1907. These surviving references connect local education with the clergy and the administration of the surrounding estate. [3]

The Easter gathering of 1995

Over Easter weekend in 1995 a field at Ryefield became the setting for a rave, drawing young people from several parts of Ireland. Garda checkpoints reduced the numbers reaching the site. A public meeting followed at Munterconnaught Community Centre. Thirty years later, The Anglo-Celt returned to its original coverage and interviewed people who remembered the gathering and the local reaction to it. [4]
