The Placenames Database places this Tullycoe in Larah parish and the barony of Tullygarvey. Its Irish name is Tulaigh Chuach. The official explanatory note tentatively offers the hillock of the cavities, retaining a question mark because cuach has several meanings. That uncertainty matters: a confident translation would go further than the official evidence supports. [2]
More than a grocery
In a 2026 interview, Rosemarie Mullen recalled a business begun by her grandfather Michael in the 1880s and continued by her parents before she took charge in 1964. Alongside groceries and a post office, the family had operated funeral and hackney services, including a two-horse hearse. Her recollections of weighing loose goods and exchanging groceries for eggs document the shop’s place in a rural trading economy. [3]

Mullen’s closed on 30 November 2025 after three generations of family ownership. Rosemarie told the Anglo-Celt that the loss of postal services following storm damage earlier that year had reduced custom. She put the premises up for lease, hoping for another use for the building.
