Place & story
The village school
Kilmanagh’s schoolhouse of 1910 later became a community hall. St Aidan’s National School opened in 1972 through the amalgamation of schools in Kilmanagh, Desart and Ballycallan. Its own history records an additional classroom in 1982 and an extension formally opened in November 2018. These changes trace the growth of a shared school serving the surrounding communities. [2]
A church rebuilt for a new era
The parish’s account dates the village church of St Edan to 1793 and records extensive renovation in 1915. Our Lady, Queen of Peace replaced it in 1973. The new building has a circular plan associated by the parish with the liturgical changes of the Second Vatican Council. Two stained-glass windows from the earlier church were incorporated into its southern wall. [3]
