Place & story
Moving the school
Fybough National School traces its origins to an older school established in 1869. Pupils and teachers moved west to the present site in 1964, when the new building opened with 56 children and two teachers under principal Ger Browne. A further extension opened in 2006, adding classrooms and a multipurpose hall. [2]
Tomás Ó Cathaláin
Tomás Ó Cathaláin, born in Fybagh around 1862, contributed to the Doegen Irish-language recording scheme. The archive’s biographical record identifies him as a farmer and postmaster who attended the local primary school. His personal details form records Irish as his mother tongue and an ability to read both Irish and English. [3]
