Place & story

The Franciscan foundation

Muckross Abbey began as a Franciscan friary in 1448, supported by Donal McCarthy Mor. Its church has a nave and chancel divided by a bell tower, with a transept to the south and a cloister to the north. The yew growing within the cloister is a striking surviving feature, although its precise age is uncertain. [2]

People & connections

A burial place for poets

The friary also became a burial place associated with Irish literature. Piaras Feiritéar, executed at Killarney in 1653, is buried here, as are the Kerry poets Aodhagán Ó Rathaille and Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin. These named graves connect the medieval religious site with later generations of Irish-language writing. [2]

William Burn’s house

Muckross House was built between 1839 and 1843 to designs by William Burn. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records its Elizabethan Revival design, with an irregular arrangement of bays, gables and projecting windows. Its elaborate domestic architecture belongs to a different period of the surrounding landscape from the nearby friary. [3]

The estate’s public future

The Bourn Vincent Memorial Park Act of 1932 provided for the State to accept the Muckross estate as a gift for a national park. It named the park and provided for a memorial to Maud Bourn Vincent. The legislation placed its management with the Commissioners of Public Works, giving the former private estate a public purpose. [4]
