Place & story

People & connections

A village band

Scartaglin musician John Brosnan, known as Johnny the Tailor, founded the O’Rahilly Céilí Band in the late 1940s. Brosnan played drums alongside accordion, fiddle and whistle players and singer Mary McQuinn. During the 1950s, changes in its musicians and repertoire produced the Radiant Showband. [2]

Saving the recordings

Public appeals from the Handed Down lecture series began in 2013. Families and musicians contributed recordings, photographs and biographical information. The audio collection includes Patrick Slattery’s tapes from his cycling visits to Sliabh Luachra in 1974–77, and recordings collected by founder P.J. Teahan. Library and arts funding helped establish the website and digitise the material. [3]
