Place & story
The old national school
Knockcarron National School at Ballylooby is a protected structure in Limerick's county record. Built in 1873, the detached school has a single-storey, five-bay form. It provides a firmly dated landmark for the community's nineteenth-century educational history. [2]
Stone carried beyond the village
Knockcarron's limestone had uses beyond its own buildings. Saint Ailbe's Church in nearby Emly was constructed in 1880–82 using stone from quarries at Hospital and Knockcarron. Designed by George Coppinger Ashlin and built by Healy Brothers of Tralee, that church preserves a material connection with this Limerick locality. Its dedication followed in January 1883. [3]
Remembering the revolutionary years
Knockcarron was a stopping point on the 2019 centenary tour organised by the local history group Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution. The organisers recalled four Volunteers lost here on 2 May 1921, during the fighting associated with nearby Lackelly. Their tour linked the locality with Knocklong, Soloheadbeg and other sites of the War of Independence, showing how the events remain part of the area's commemorative landscape. [4]
