Place & story

Saint Brigid’s beside the road

Kilbride's Catholic church stands in Ballinameesda Lower, within the locality near Brittas Bay. The architectural inventory dates it to about 1850. Its cruciform plan is expressed in a low rendered building with pointed windows and a stone bellcote above the entrance gable. Decorative iron hinges and a moulded surround give particular attention to the front doorway, while a low boundary wall and wrought-iron gate separate the church from the road. [2]

Springfield’s Georgian house

Springfield House in Kilbride dates to around 1800. The architectural inventory describes a compact two-storey Georgian house with a hipped slate roof and timber sash windows. A fanlight with decorative tracery lights the entrance. It distinguishes the older house from alterations made around 1995, including the column-supported hood above the doorway. The building is part of the locality's country-house landscape. [3]

People & connections

Elizabeth Bobbett and farmers’ organisation

Elizabeth Bobbett 1898–1971 made Springfield farm her home and workplace from 1919. Historian Peter Moser describes her mixed farm, producing crops and keeping several kinds of livestock. Financial pressures during the 1930s helped turn her towards collective action for farmers. She became a founder and general secretary of the Irish Farmers' Federation, connecting this Kilbride holding with national agricultural organisation. [4]
