Place & story

Humewood’s Victorian architecture

Humewood Castle was built in 1867–70 to William White’s design, then extended in 1873–77 by James Brooks. The large country house uses a deliberately irregular arrangement of towers, gables, projecting windows and tall chimneys. Its principal residential block rises higher than the long service wing. These varied forms give it the appearance of a castle, but the architectural survey identifies it as a nineteenth-century country house rather than a surviving medieval fortress. [2]

The village school building

Kiltegan’s former national school building at Fiddan dates broadly to around 1870. It has two storeys, with upper windows set into gabled dormers and a stone-framed entrance beneath a fanlight. Later additions extend its footprint to the west. The architectural survey also records a communal cast-iron water pump beside the entrance gate. School and pump preserve two aspects of the older village streetscape: education and a shared source of water. [3]

The Kiltegan Fathers

Saint Patrick’s Missionary Society established a headquarters at Kiltegan on a trial basis in 1930, using a house and twenty acres donated by tea merchant John Hughes. Father P. J. Whitney led the developing organisation, whose early members had worked with Bishop Joseph Shanahan in southern Nigeria. The society was formally founded on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1932. The Kiltegan base initially provided organisation and a place for returning missionaries to stay, giving the village an enduring international association. [4]
