Place & story

The parish established in 1813

Moyne’s Church of Ireland parish was formed in 1813 from townlands previously belonging to Hacketstown. Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account records support from the Board of First Fruits for a glebe house in 1817. Education also depended on outside patronage: Earl Fitzwilliam provided a schoolhouse and land, while the Reverend Mr Wright and the Governors of the Foundling Hospital contributed towards a school attended by about 80 children. These figures concern the wider parish, rather than the hamlet alone. [2]

Saint John’s church

Saint John’s was built in 1815 in the Gothic manner associated with Board of First Fruits churches. Its square entrance tower has a battlemented parapet, while granite dressings frame pointed windows and mark the tower’s stages. The nave’s north wall has no windows. A small chancel and vestry project at the eastern end. The graveyard’s enclosing rubble wall and iron gates retain the close relationship between the church and its burial ground. [3]

A house with public functions

A two-storey house dating from around 1835 stands prominently in Moyne, with one side directly beside the road. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage notes that an Ordnance Survey map labels it as both dispensary and post office. Its hipped slate roof, substantial eaves brackets and varied timber sash windows give it a more formal appearance than a simple cottage. The mapped uses record the practical services once accommodated within this small rural settlement. [4]
