Place & story

Ballymore and Walterstown

Ballymore is part of the linked settlement of Ballymore and Walterstown on Great Island. Cork County Council’s 2005 local plan identified the school, public house and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church as its community facilities, and recorded the church as a protected structure. The plan placed the settlement within the metropolitan green belt, giving agriculture, open space and recreation a particular role in the surrounding landscape. [2]

The school built with Belvelly brick

Walterstown National School opened on 9 June 1884 with 160 pupils. Its own history records that the original building used brick from Belvelly, with Denis O’Mahony as principal and Miss Bride as assistant teacher. Children brought wood for the open fire. A replacement school opened in 2002 on the former playing field, using brick chosen to complement the older building. The original school found a new purpose as the Ballymore Community Association’s community centre. [3]

People & connections

Michael Harrington at Templerobin

Templerobin churchyard at Ballymore contains the tomb of Michael Harrington, a Jesuit priest and teacher who died in 1810. The Irish Jesuit Archives records his work at Reddington Academy in nearby Ballybrassil after the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773. His former pupils erected the monument in gratitude for his teaching. The tomb connects the churchyard with an earlier educational community on Great Island. [4]
