Place & story
Ballyvoige in the postal directory
Guy's 1914 directory lists Ballyvoige under Macroom, its nearest railway station, and names M. Murphy as postmaster. Logainm confirms Ballyvoige as a local variant of Ballyvoge in Kilnamartery parish. [2] [3]
Butter markets and local trades
Ballyvoige Cross held fresh-butter markets on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. The directory also records blacksmiths and a carpenter, and names John and Mary Sullivan as the national school's head teachers. [2]
Four generations at the post office
A 2022 report traced the Cill na Martra post office back to 1886, when Conchubhar O’Riordan became sub-postmaster and the office appeared in Guy’s directory under Ballyvoge. Four generations of the family continued the business. Bernie Murphy’s retirement after twenty-nine years as postmistress brought that succession to an end, and the attached shop also closed. The history ties the older postal name to an institution remembered within modern Cill na Martra. [4]
