Place & story

The school and its old cottage

Berrings National School traces its foundation to 1847. Its original building survives as the small cottage in front of the church, later used as the local post office until its closure in the late 1990s. A replacement four-classroom school opened in 1971. A hall and extension followed in 2001, with further additions in 2009, 2011 and 2017. The sequence records the expansion of a village institution while its first building found another community use. [2]

Saint Mary’s Church

Saint Mary’s Church at Berrings was built during the ministry of Maurice Lane, parish priest from 1816 to 1822. The parish account places an earlier chapel of ease in the townland of Kilmurry and distinguishes it from the present church. Lane was buried in Matehy graveyard. The church belongs to the same early nineteenth-century network of worship and education that subsequently supported the national school at Berrings. [3]

A dairy and railway district

Inniscarra Historical Society’s account of Berrings in 1922–23 names the Co-Operative and Dairy Society as the district’s principal commercial concern, managed by Timothy Shine. North Kilmurry provided the nearest station on the Cork and Muskerry Light Railway, with Jeremiah Reen as stationmaster. Patrick Reen ran Berrings post office, and Daniel O’Driscoll and his wife taught at the school. The details connect the dairy economy with the transport, postal and educational services supporting the surrounding countryside. [4]
