Place & story
Arthur Mulcahy in March 1921
Arthur Mulcahy, a farmer's son from Currabeha, was killed during a British military roundup on 22 March 1921. University College Cork's fatality register identifies him as an IRA volunteer and records the disputed official account that he was shot while attempting to escape. Its examination of the military inquest and contemporary reports notes evidence of injuries beyond the gunshot wounds, leaving that explanation open to question. [2]
Burial and roadside commemoration
Mulcahy's body was taken to Fermoy after his death, and he was subsequently buried in the church cemetery at Tallow in County Waterford. A monument on the Clashaganniv Road near Conna marks the place where he was killed. These separate sites connect his Currabeha origins with the circumstances of his death and burial, preserving a local memorial geography that extends beyond the townland itself. [2]
The John Mitchells team
Saint Catherine's GAA history records hurling in Currabeha under the name John Mitchells from about 1938 to 1941. The team combined local players with recruits from Castlelyons and Ballyduff, wearing red-and-white jerseys. Most matches were played in Sheehan's field, with others at Modeligo. After Currabeha's and Kilcoran's teams faded, a new effort revived organised hurling at Conna, which affiliated to the East Cork Board in 1942. [3]
