Place & story

A shop in the village terrace

A terraced house and shop surveyed by the National Inventory in 2008 illustrates the working streetscape of Eyeries. Built around 1900, the three-bay, two-storey building retained timber sash windows, a panelled door with an overlight and a ground-floor display window. The survey singled out the survival of the original shop counter inside. These details connect the village’s familiar painted terraces with the everyday trade once conducted behind their street fronts. [2]

People & connections

George Walsh’s windows

St Kentigern’s Church contains stained glass by George Walsh, whose own portfolio dates the commission’s completion to 1996. Researcher Finola Finlay’s study describes windows that combine religious subjects with the history and daily life of Eyeries. Fishing, farming, emigration and communication appear alongside sacred themes; one scene includes a satellite dish and another a man fly-fishing. The commission gives local work and experience a place within the church’s visual narrative. [3] [4]

Artists help the school expand

Scoil Chaitigheirn opened a new wing of classrooms and an assembly hall on 12 June 2009. A contemporary Anam Cara newsletter records principal Sheila Harrington’s fundraising work with Father Mossie Brick. Former writers and artists in residence at the nearby retreat contributed nearly a quarter of the amount being raised. The account documents a practical connection between the international creative visitors hosted in Eyeries and a building used by the local school community. [5]
