Place & story

Replacing the thatched church

Kilshannig Heritage Society records that the Lombard family provided a site in Brittas for Glantane's Catholic church, which opened in 1821 as a small thatched building. In 1877 Fr Lynch called a meeting to seek a larger replacement. An alternative site near the village could not be secured, so the earlier building was demolished. The present church opened on its site in 1878, dedicated to St John the Baptist. [2]

Glass and gifts

The society's account also records how the church's interior acquired its furnishings. Fr Bartholomew Shinnick commissioned the three Munich-made sanctuary windows in 1905, including one depicting St John the Baptist. Workers at Lombardstown creamery contributed through weekly collections towards the original Stations of the Cross, alongside a donation from Dr Ryan. The creamery itself presented the sanctuary lamp. These gifts connect the building with the working community as well as its clergy. [2]

School endowments and a new building

The National Library's catalogue of the Lombard family papers identifies a grant of Glantane land for a schoolhouse by the Misses Lombards and others to the minister and churchwardens of Kilshannig. The surviving group of deeds covers 1624–1822; the catalogue does not assign that grant an individual date. A later educational landmark is St Abbey's National School, whose own history dates construction to 1952 and its official opening by the Bishop of Cloyne to 1953. [3] [4]
