Place & story

A cast-iron marker

A freestanding cast-iron road sign at Gortaroo is recorded in the National Inventory, which dates it to about 1940. Raised lettering and a harp decorate a rectangular panel with rounded corners. The inventory identifies the harp as evidence that the sign was installed after the foundation of the Irish state. [2]

Saint Ita’s sanctuary windows

In her account of Watson stained glass, Finola of Roaringwater Journal describes Saint Ita’s church at Gortroe near Youghal. A three-light sanctuary window places the Sacred Heart between Thaddeus McCarthy and Saint Ita. She identifies Watson’s Revivalist work there and records another window depicting Lourdes on the south wall. [3]
