Place & story
The church of Seanach
Placenames researchers Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich and Aindí Mac Giolla Chomhghaill explain the local Irish name, Cill Sheanaigh, as the church of Seanach. They suggest that English Johnstown arose through a misunderstanding of that personal name. Their account concerns this Cork townland specifically and does not identify Seanach with a particular documented saint. [2]
School and church
Johnstown National School amalgamated with Kilnadur National School in 2001 to form St Enda’s National School at Kilnadur, according to the successor school’s own history. Johnstown’s St Enda’s Church is listed by the Diocese of Cork and Ross as dating to 1870. [3] [4]
