Place & story
The 1943 victory
Kildinan Athletic Club won the All-Ireland junior cross-country championship in 1943 under captain George Gubbins. John Walshe’s account for Cork Athletics names a twelve-man winning team and places its training ground in the locality between Rathcormac and Glenville. The club also accumulated seven Cork senior cross-country titles before declining after 1952. [2]
Remembering the runners
Eight decades after the championship, a monument was unveiled beside the field where the athletes had trained. The occasion also launched Remembering Kildinan Athletics, a 36-page booklet compiled by Gerard Murphy. Murphy recalled growing up nearby without knowing that an earlier generation had trained on the same local roads. [2]
