Place & story

The ambush of August 1920

On 22 August 1920, Kilmurry Volunteers ambushed an RIC party at Lissarda. Michael Galvin was killed and Daniel O'Leary wounded before the Volunteers withdrew. Kilmurry Heritage records the action in its account of Patrick Sheehan, who helped carry Galvin from the scene. [2]

A post office at home

Siobhán O'Leary recalled that her father, John O'Mahony, opened a post office in the family home in 1933. Previously it had operated within Lissarda Creamery. Her mother Hannah helped run the service. After her father died in 1963, Siobhán took over and continued until her retirement in 2001. [3]
