Place & story

Ceol na gCruach

The Glen Tavern, also known as Dinny’s, hosts Ceol na gCruach, a festival devoted to the musical traditions of the Croaghs around Glenties. The programme brings together sessions, workshops, dancing and talks. Creative Ireland’s account of the 2021 festival explains its emphasis on learning by listening and joining in, following the older practice of house sessions where individual musicians contributed their own styles within a shared gathering. [2]

Music answered across the glen

The 2021 programme introduced Macallaí sa Ghleann, recalling the practice of playing outdoors to a musician on the opposite side of the valley. The organisers described players answering one another and continuing through their repertoires. They selected locations in the Glen of Glenties where the exchange could be heard across the landscape. The event connected performance with the geography in which the local music tradition had developed. [2]

People & connections

A song collection returns to the district

In July 2023 the Glen Tavern was chosen for the first launch of Amhráin Anna John Chiot, edited by Pól Ó Seachnasaigh. The collection brings together 128 songs and fragments recorded from Anna John Chiot Nic an Luain in the Bluestacks between 1937 and 1948. New recordings by Donegal singers accompanied the publication. The Greenans launch linked the preserved words of a local tradition with singers performing them for a later generation. [3]
