Place & story

The lake powering local work

The Mulroy Drive community trail records Johnstons of Kindrum as a corn and flax milling business operating around 1900. Water flowing out of Kindrum Lake powered the mills, connecting local processing work with the freshwater landscape. The same account identifies O’Callaghans as a former pub and shop, beside the post office they also ran. Together these premises formed part of the hamlet’s commercial and service life. [2]

The Fanad Patriots Monument

A limestone Celtic cross overlooking Kindrum Lough was erected in 1960. It commemorates Neil Shield, Michael Heraghty and Michael McElwee, linking their names with the 1878 killing of Lord Leitrim. Its inscription celebrates the event as resistance to landlordism. The architectural inventory records the cross, plinth and stepped base: the monument preserves a particular commemorative interpretation of the killing, rather than serving as independent proof of each man’s role. [3]

Plants in a stony-bottomed lake

Kindrum Lough also has a distinctive natural heritage. The National Parks and Wildlife Service’s 2015 synopsis records slender naiad and the rare stonewort Nitella spanioclema, along with Arctic char. Its stony bed contrasts with nearby sand-bottomed machair lakes. Reeds and wet fen connect it with smaller Fallaneas Lough, whose outflow enters Kindrum. The account identifies this combination of habitat and rare species as the site’s conservation significance. [4]
