Place & story
A cooperative beginning
The food-processing business at Meenaneary began as a cooperative in 1962, associated with Father James McDyer's efforts to create local employment. Its successor, Errigal Bay, continued to operate a seafood factory there. In March 2024 Donegal Daily reported approval for an extension intended for plant-based food production. [2]
The crab season of 1979
The local magazine An Liag reported an especially busy crab season at Meenaneary in August–September 1979. Manager Jarlath Morris described it as the factory's most successful season to that point, with as many as 95 people employed. The contemporary report captures the scale of seasonal work in the village. [3]
