Place & story
Grianán of Aileach
Grianán of Aileach stands in Speenoge, within the banks of an earlier hillfort and near a prehistoric mound. The stone cashel has internal terraces connected by steps, but much of the visible structure comes from restoration rather than its first construction. After centuries as a ruin, it was rebuilt in the 1870s and subsequently repaired. This distinction matters when reading the impressive stone walls as evidence of an early medieval stronghold. [2]
What a wall collapse revealed
Archaeological monitoring in 2003 examined a collapsed section of Grianán’s west-facing wall. Christopher Read’s team sifted the debris and observed the removal of unstable masonry before reconstruction. Most material came from recent repairs; a small group of bottle-glass fragments and a clay-pipe stem probably related to the nineteenth-century rebuilding. The work did not encounter any part of the cashel’s original construction. [2]
Burt Presbyterian Church
Burt Presbyterian Church at Carrownamaddy, addressed as Speenoge, was built around 1893. It replaced an earlier church on the same site, serving a congregation with roots in the seventeenth century. Its elaborate exterior includes buttresses with decorative finials, pointed windows and rose windows high in the gables. Inside, timber panelling and a gallery contribute to a building markedly different from the much earlier monuments in the surrounding district. [3]
