Place & story

The Lough Foyle air station

Construction of the American station at Leper’s Point, Ture, began in January 1918. The US Naval History and Heritage Command distinguishes its commissioning on 1 July from becoming fully operational on 3 September. Flying boats patrolled the northern approaches to the Irish Sea. Operations ended after the November armistice, and the station was decommissioned on 22 February 1919. [2] [3]

Remembering the base

In September 2021, Donegal Daily reported the unveiling of three memorial plaques at the entrance to a former station field beside the R238. The project grew out of Inishowen Maritime Museum’s research for the Decade of Centenaries programme, supported by Donegal County Council and FLAG North. It commemorates a short-lived naval presence rather than an enduring airport. [3]

Ture House

Ture House represents another layer of local building history. The National Inventory dates the two-storey farmhouse to about 1870 and records timber sash windows and a segmental-headed entrance. An earlier house appears on the first-edition Ordnance Survey map of about 1837. The inventory suggests that some of its fabric may have been incorporated into the later house, while leaving that possibility unconfirmed. [4]
