Place & story
A school in a cottage
Ros Davies's compilation of County Down school records identifies an Edentrillick school established in 1825 and occupying part of a cottage. By 1836 it operated under the Kildare Place Society, with patronage from the Marquis and Marchioness of Downshire. Andrew Hewitt was its Presbyterian master. Pupils' payments and a small contribution from John Scott supported the school, while the minister from Drumlough meeting house visited it. [2]
Alexander Knox’s birthplace
Alexander Knox was born at Eden Hill House, Edentrillick, in 1802. He studied medicine in Edinburgh, graduated in 1831 and worked as a naval assistant surgeon before practising in Dromore. His interests extended beyond medicine: Irish Watering Places appeared in 1845, followed by work on cholera. After retiring from practice, he produced A History of County Down in 1875, linking this rural birthplace with an important account of the county. [3] [4]
The quarry and its landscape
Stone working also forms part of Edentrillick's history. A case study by planning consultants Quarryplan describes an application to extend an existing greywacke quarry northwards and consolidate older mineral workings. It records permission for approximately six million tonnes of gritstone. The scheme included proposals for eventual restoration to a lake and nature-conservation habitat; these describe the intended after-use rather than evidence that restoration has been completed. [5]
