Place & story

A crossroads village

Kilmore developed around the meeting of Church, Teconnaught and Kilmore Roads. The council’s 2018 village plan traces a recognisable settlement there by 1832, supported by passing traffic, corn and flax milling, churches and schools. By the later nineteenth century, a post office and further community buildings had reinforced that core. The plan notes how little the basic form had changed: its road junctions and historic buildings still explain the arrangement of the village. [2]

The old church moves to a museum

Kilmore’s late eighteenth-century Church of Ireland building was dismantled in 1976 and reconstructed at the Ulster Folk Museum at Cultra. Its plain stone body, western tower and porch illustrate a rural church built for a congregation of about 160. Inside, reconstructed box pews recall a layout gradually replaced elsewhere by rows of benches. The museum also preserves details of comfort and lighting: a solid-fuel stove introduced in the 1860s, oil lamps and a north wall without windows to reduce draughts. [3]

Christ Church and remembered routines

The replacement Christ Church was designed by Thomas Drew, whose other work included Saint Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast. Its tower became a prominent feature of Kilmore’s church landscape. The parish’s history also records the recollections of Bobby Nelson, who remembered lighting the oil lamps and ringing the bell with his father before services. Those practical tasks, and his memories of crowded Harvest Sundays, connect the building’s architectural history with the routines of its congregation. [4]
