Place & story
The church of the Immaculate Conception
Timothy Hevey designed Leitrim’s Catholic church for the Reverend Arthur Finnegan of Upper Drumgooland parish. Its foundation stone was laid on 8 June 1871 and the building was dedicated on 2 August 1874. O’Flynn and Mackin carried out construction, while C. W. Harrison of Dublin supplied carving and altars. The spire was added in 1874. These recorded contributions identify the architect, builders and craftsmen behind a principal village landmark. [2]
Liatroim Fontenoys
Liatroim Fontenoys dates its foundation to 1888 and has its grounds on Backaderry Road at Leitrim. A major hurling success came in December 2022, when it became the first Down club to win the Ulster intermediate championship. The team beat Middletown of Armagh at Corrigan Park by 2–20 to 0–20. Goals from Conor McCrickard and P. J. Davidson helped secure the victory, while captain Pearse Óg McCrickard scored twelve points. [3] [4]
Maureen O’Higgins
Liatroim Fontenoys member Maureen O’Higgins became Down GAA’s first female chairperson at its convention on 16 December 2024. Her election followed five years as vice-chairperson and earlier work as county development officer and an Ulster Council member. She had also won All-Ireland honours in camogie with club and county. Down GAA noted that she was the second chairperson from the Fontenoys, following Charlie Keown, linking her achievement with an established local contribution to county administration. [5]
