Place & story

Returning a derelict building to use

The Old Post Office’s own history dates the building to the 1840s. Alison and Trevor Smylie acquired it in 2004 after fourteen years of dereliction. The former postal building became tea rooms, with a kitchen shop and space for locally made crafts. [2]

Thatch and bog oak

The owners’ restoration account records local help with the work, the use of local bog oak where possible and restoration of the thatched roof. The building stands on the road through Lisbane between Comber and Downpatrick. [2]
