Place & story
A congregation before a church building
The congregational history written by J. M. Magowan records Lisnastrean as the original name of the congregation that became Legacurry Presbyterian Church. Phineas Whiteside was ordained to its pastoral charge on 19 August 1841. Before obtaining a permanent church, the congregation used the schoolhouse at Cabra new bridge, locally called Purg, as a mission station. [2]
In 1843 Robert Morrow of Legacurry House gave the congregation a church and graveyard site in Legacurry townland. The church opened on 27 March 1844. That move explains the later Legacurry name; it does not place the surviving church building within Lisnastrean. [2]
