Place & story

The neighbouring meeting house

Rademon Non-Subscribing Presbyterian meeting house on Listooder Road was built in 1787, the third meeting house on a site used by a congregation founded in 1713. The official building record describes a two-storey, T-shaped stone structure with a decorated fanlight above the entrance. Inside, panelled box pews, galleries and a tall pulpit reached by two staircases preserve the arrangement of an eighteenth-century meeting house. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century gravestones surround the building. [2]

Remembering Cock Corner

Radio producer Raymond McCullough investigated the history of a building he had bought in Listooder and published his findings in 2013. He identified the adjoining former shop and pub, known as the Cock, as the source of the hamlet's older name, Cock Corner. He also reported finding valuation records describing his own property as a house and shop between 1936 and 1957. Bottles uncovered during work on the building supplied a more tangible reminder of its commercial past. [3]

A European ploughing champion

Listooder and District Ploughing Society member William Gill won the European Vintage Ploughing Championship in the Netherlands in 2023. Farming Life reported that he took both the mounted hydraulic class and the overall title after two days of competition. Vintage classes used tractors and ploughs produced before 1959. The society celebrated his success at Temple Golf Club, marking the first time one of its members had won that European vintage title. [4]
