Place & story

A cottage household in the estate records

Christopher Earls Brennen’s research in the Downshire estate papers identifies Jeremiah Woods as a linen manufacturer holding land in Taughblane under a lease of 1774. The 1863 valuation placed Edward Brennan in a house and small garden sublet from Woods. Marriage records described Brennan as a weaver in 1852 and a labourer in 1863, providing a closely documented example of different occupations within one rural household. [2]

A schoolroom before a church

The same archival study records services held every second Sunday afternoon in a Taughblane schoolroom between 1835 and 1840, before St John’s church opened in neighbouring Upper Kilwarlin. It also reproduces evidence that Brennan’s daughters Anna and Eliza Jane were living in Taughblane when they married there in 1852 and 1863. These records connect the townland’s homes with the surrounding district’s religious and educational life. [2]

Adding a new product to the dairy farm

A 2021 Department of Agriculture account traced Hollowbridge Farm’s operation in Taughblane back to 1805 and described six generations of family ownership. Stephen and Amanda Gibson began making ice cream from the farm’s milk in 2018. Support from CAFRE dairy technologists and an Invest NI innovation voucher helped develop the product, while a drive-through service became part of its local trade during lockdown. [3]
