Place & story

Building the estate

The Housing Trust developed Tullycarnet between 1966 and 1970, with the new Northern Ireland Housing Executive completing work in the early 1970s. Earlier maps show a landscape of houses and estates before Belfast expanded eastwards. The former Belfast–Comber railway also crossed the area; its route later became the Comber Greenway. Tullycarnet transferred from Castlereagh to Belfast council administration in 2015. [2]

People & connections

The Tullycarnet Yarnspinners

Jim Armstrong helped establish the Tullycarnet Yarnspinners after seeing storyteller Liz Weir at the Linen Hall Library. The group first met at Tullycarnet Library in February 1991, with support from librarian Adrienne Adair. After Jim’s death, Peg Armstrong continued running the sessions until 2013. Their son Roger later founded the Armstrong Storytelling Trust in their memory. [3]
