Place & story
Robert Luske’s church
The Irish Architectural Archive identifies Robert Luske as architect of St Patrick's Catholic church at Fallagloon, also known as Glen chapel. Construction began in 1825 and was completed in 1827 or 1828. The archive's entry, drawing on the Ordnance Survey memoirs, describes a six-bay building with sixteen windows and three doors, measuring 110 by 40 feet internally. A report from 1830 still described it as unconsecrated, distinguishing the completion of building work from its formal religious dedication. [2]
The 1911–1912 alterations
A later campaign altered and improved the church in 1911–1912. The architectural archive attributes that work to James Patrick McGrath, acting for Monsignor McGurk, the parish priest. J. Ballantine and Company of Derry carried out the contract, recorded at £3,000. The church was dedicated in October 1912. References to contemporary issues of the Irish Builder document this phase separately from Luske's original nineteenth-century building. [2]
A painting for Fallagloon Hall
In March 2026 the diocesan newspaper interviewed Patricia McMaster about her painting of St Patrick in Fallagloon Hall. She recalled receiving the commission in 1989 and remembered the new hall opening on 6 August that year, with Bishop Francis Lagan among those admiring the picture. The hall committee later asked her to refresh the painting for the saint's feast day. Her account connects a surviving local artwork with the opening and continuing use of the community building. [3]
