Place & story

A terrace left beside the ice

Geographer Stephen McCarron identified a small, flat-topped gravel terrace at Gosheden, about 120 metres above sea level on the western side of the Faughan Valley. His study interprets its layered deposits as material carried into water held beside a retreating ice margin. Gravel hummocks mark the terrace’s southern edges. The feature preserves evidence of a temporary water body within a landscape very different from the present river valley. [2]

From marginal farmland to woodland

The particulars for nearby Gosheden Wood record its establishment on marginal farmland. Preparing raised planting positions and improving drainage exposed an older underground stone culvert, a remnant of the land’s agricultural use. The resulting woodland was predominantly birch, with oak, Scots pine, alder and hazel also present. This account records a change in land use while noting how an earlier drainage system remained within the planted landscape. [3]

Making mouldings in Gosheden

Manor Mouldings gives 1985 as its year of establishment and identifies its workshop in Gosheden. There, plaster and concrete architectural mouldings are made by hand for interiors and exteriors. The company’s work includes restoration as well as new buildings, carrying techniques for cornices and other decorative details into modern commissions. Its own account provides a record of a specialist manufacturing business in the locality, alongside the surrounding agricultural and wooded landscape. [4]
