Place & story
The White Heather players
During the 1940s, Lisnamuck footballers competed in local seven-a-side tournaments when they lacked enough players for regular larger teams. Known as the White Heather Seven, they formed Sean Larkin’s club in 1945. Watty Graham’s club history credits Jim McKenna with leading its formation and records that the South Derry Board had rejected the proposed White Heather name before the new club adopted Sean Larkin’s. [2]
Raising money through drama
The Lisnamuck club depended on more than its players. Jim Fullerton provided a field without charge, while a dramatic society staged performances to help buy equipment and jerseys. The team wore blue and white hoops and later played at a field in Fallaghgloon known as Gorry’s Park. These practical arrangements connect football with amateur entertainment and the use of neighbouring agricultural land. [2]
A dispersed locality in a planning inquiry
A Planning Appeals Commission report issued in 2011 considered whether Lisnamuck should receive formal recognition as a small settlement. The commissioners described separate groups of buildings near Lisnamuck Road and Five Mile Straight rather than a continuous village centre. They recommended against designation on the evidence presented. This planning assessment concerned the settlement’s physical form and facilities, distinct from the community ties preserved in its sporting history. [3]
