Place & story

The Daff Stone

In an account published in 1904, the Reverend George R. Buick described a large capstone on a low mound near Moneydig crossroads. Examination with S. K. Kircker revealed a burial chamber formed by seven upright stones. Buick also reported faint decoration on one upright, including circular and pointed figures, recording what the investigators could distinguish rather than presenting a complete or certain interpretation of the markings. [2]

A congregation recorded

A transcription of Moneydig’s baptismal register preserves a short history of its ministers. It records Patrick Rogers Kilbough’s ordination in December 1837 and Henry H. Finlay’s departure for mission work in Australia in 1863. The church building itself is described in the official historic-building survey as a nineteenth-century Presbyterian barn church with galleries. The 2012 survey recorded substantial replacement of original materials and confirmed that the building was not listed. [3] [4]

An exchange with Toronto

In summer 2018, Moneydig’s minister Stuart Morrow exchanged congregations with Tim Bruneau of St Giles Kingsway Presbyterian Church in Toronto. The congregation’s report records both ministers beginning worship in their temporary churches on 8 July. Morrow described meeting members of the Canadian congregation, including people who had emigrated from Northern Ireland, giving this rural church a documented connection across the Atlantic. [5]
